We always take it for granted that finding that perfect dress will come easy. How hard can it be?! For those who have gone through the tiring process of trudging from one bridal house to another every weekend and scouring online stores in bed would attest that it really isn’t that easy. So here are some tips on ways to get you through the search phase and ensure you walk down the aisle with The One!
Plan, Plan, Plan
Before you hit the shops like a sugar-deprived child, it’s important to sit down and make a plan. First is your budget, make a realistic one and ensure you stick to it. Don’t forget to include the possibility of last minute alterations. Go through every wedding magazine, website, online stores and wedding sites (like ours!) and pin down your 5 favourite looks. And lastly, give yourself ample time – don’t procrastinate! A good time is between 6 months to 1 year before the big day.
Now you’re ready to start shopping. Bring someone with you, someone that would be dead honest to tell you that neon yellow tulle is NOT flattering! Tell the assistants at the store your budget and styles you like right from the start so you remain focused. It’s also important to bring your own shoes with you – if you’ve bought your wedding shoes already all the better! The length of the dress needs to be exact, with your toes just peeking out from beneath.
Wait For It
When you do find that one perfect dress and you still have time, don’t buy it yet. This is the time to scout around and compare prices. Many bridal stores get their gowns from the same sources so you might be pleasantly surprised to find the exact same piece with a lower price tag.
Stop the Search
Once you’ve finally decided and made the purchase, STOP looking! Many make the mistake of continuing to search and chances are you may find another dress you like even more and cause you to momentarily forget you had a budget!
Keep on Trying
Last but not least, try your gown on every single week leading up to your big day. The stress of wedding planning can cause you to gain or lose weight so monitor this like a hawk to avoid any surprises. If alteration is absolutely necessary, have it done at least 3-4 weeks prior as some stores may take a while if it’s a complicated adjustment.
If you have just gotten engaged, it’s now time to start looking for your perfect wedding dress!
